The cave is one of the phenomenal landmarks in the town of Devin, located in the Trigrad Gorge. Formed as a result of a collapse of earth layers, the cave can be explored by passing through a 150-meter-long tunnel, which leads directly to an impressive cave hall so vast that it could fit the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral inside. From this hall, a concrete staircase leads to the natural entrance of the cave. If you climb up, you can witness one of the highest underground waterfalls in Europe, standing at a remarkable 42 meters.
Since Thracian times, a legend has been passed down, telling that tribal leaders would throw themselves from this spot in a quest for immortality. Centuries later, people believed that this place was the entrance to the underworld — the path to eternal life. To honor their gods and appease evil forces, the local inhabitants would sacrifice the most beautiful maidens.
The local residents can also tell you about the belief that nothing entering the underground labyrinth within the cave ever comes back out. Based on these stories, steeped in mystery and history, the cave was named The Devil’s Throat and is open to visitors all year round.
