The Bistritsa River is located in Western Bulgaria and is a tributary of the Dzherman River, which flows past numerous houses and villas in the town of Sapareva Banya.
The Bistritsa River originates near Damga Peak in the Rila Mountains, passes through the Pazardere cirque, and then, below the “Ivan Vazov” mountain hut, enters a large, rocky valley. It is here that the unique Bistritsa Waterfall is formed—one of the most famous natural attractions in the Rila Mountains. From there, the river continues into the Dzherman, and eventually flows into the mighty Struma River.
The Bistritsa Waterfall is located near the village of Bistritsa and is part of the Dupnitsa Municipality. It is formed by the Bistritsa River, which remains full-flowing throughout the entire year. The waterfall has a drop of over 35 meters, creating a truly breathtaking sight.
The water cascades down several steps made up of massive stone blocks. The gorge of the Bistritsa River and the waterfall create a stunning scene in autumn, when the surroundings are painted in warm colors. In spring and summer, the area becomes a popular destination for tourists who organize picnics and hiking trips in the midst of beautiful nature. Around the waterfall, there are shelters, rest areas, fire pits, and barbecue spots. Numerous signposts are placed throughout the area to help nature lovers find their way and avoid getting lost.
The hiking trail to the Samokovishteto area and the magnificent waterfall takes about five hours round-trip. The trailhead starts right at the edge of the village of Bistritsa. A special parking area has been built for visitors to leave their vehicles, escape the noisy and polluted city, and embark on a peaceful nature walk.
The trail follows a dirt road that winds around the last houses of the village, passes through rest areas and signposts, and crosses above the gorge of the Bistritsa River, revealing a magical view of the beautiful valley and the town of Dupnitsa.
Bistritsa Waterfall has become a favorite destination for people from the nearby villages and towns, as well as for many residents of Sofia. Recently, a growing number of international tourists have also begun visiting, drawn by the enchanting nature of Bulgaria. Many stay in nearby hotels in Sapareva Banya and Dupnitsa. Group tours and hikes are organized for those eager to discover the beauty of the Bistritsa Waterfall and its surroundings.
The beauty of Bulgarian nature is truly boundless.
