Devin is located in the very center of the middle part of the Rhodopes at 760 meters above sea level. The distance from Devin to Sofia is 220 kilometers, and to Smolyan 45 kilometers. The winter resort of Pamporovo is only 35 kilometers away. Its location has attracted settlers and vacationers to Devin since ancient times.
Archaeologists and historians who studied the area speak of a settlement that existed in Thracian times and was called Diove. After the Slavs conquered the Rhodopes, the settlement was renamed to the Slavic Devlen, and the town has been called Devin since 1923.
The ancient history of the city is also evidenced by the archaeological research conducted in it, during which a medieval necropolis from the 13th-14th centuries was discovered in the center of Devin.
